One of the two churches of Fountana, standing a few dozen metres from the Panagia Vlacherna. The parish of Magazia and Fountana counts both, and visitors regularly take one for the other.
We record this one as the Estavromenos, the church of the Crucified. The identification is ours, based on the position of the two buildings and on the parish lists; if you know the pair, tell us if we have them the right way round.
The Estavromenos of Fountana is described in the 1880s as white, reached by steps, with a magnificent giant orange tree to the right and a small square in front; a plain bell gable with a double-headed eagle; an arched, lozenge-patterned doorway carrying the date 1859, picked out in blue and yellow. Inside, exposed roof timbers, a new stone iconostasis, a Virgin and wall paintings of saints by an untrained hand, and on the right an altar of the Cross with a glazed icon.
Feast: the Exaltation of the Cross, 14 September.
