  • Agios Andreas is the parish church of Lakka, and by local tradition the oldest church on Paxos.

A visitor who recorded it in the 1880s was told exactly that, and noted two details on the front: a stone shaped like a cannon set into the facade, and two carved fish — because, as they told him, the saint was a fisherman. For a harbour church of a village that lived by the sea, it is the right dedication and the right ornament.

Agios Andreas has its part in the Paxiot Easter. After Easter the icon of the Ypapanti comes down from Grammatikeika and stays here until the Friday of the Life-Giving Spring, when it moves on to Loggos.

    Feast day: 30 November.

A small church above the harbour of Lakka, reached by a flight of twenty-five steps. The climb is the point: from the top you look straight out through the mouth of the bay. In the survey of 1885 the harbour of Lakka, then five people, is listed with two churches, Agios Ioannis and Agios Andreas — this one and the Read more...

Agios Vasilios at Dalietatika belongs to the Makris, Mastoras, Argyros and Grammatikos families and is listed in 1781. Like the Agios Dimitrios a little below it, its foundations were laid in 1750 and work was still under way in 1777: the hamlet was building two churches at once, over a generation. Feast day: 1 January. Read more...

Agios Dimitrios at Dalietatika is listed in 1781. Its foundations were laid in 1750 and work was still going on in 1777 — twenty-seven years of building, which for a hamlet church was normal rather than slow: these were put up out of what was left over after the harvest. The church belongs to the Dalietos and Argyros families, together Read more...

The first lighthouse of Cape Lakka was originally lit in 1825. It operated with olive oil and with a mirror machine with fixed parabolic mirrors. Its function was improved in 1887 and 1890, replacing the old mechanism. The lighthouse operated with oil until 1913. In March of 1919 the lighthouse with its auxiliary buildings were destroyed because of a sudden Read more...

Agios Thomas in Lakka appears in none of the old catalogues. The simplest explanation is the one the Greek record gives: it is a small church and was probably built around 1880, long after the lists were drawn up. That makes it one of the youngest churches on Paxos, and a useful reminder that the island did not stop building Read more...

Hidden in a green valley above Lakka, in the hamlet of Grammatikeika, stands the church that most people on Paxos will send you to first: the Ypapanti, the Presentation of Christ. It was built in 1601 by two brothers, Adam and Vasilis San Ippolito, and it is the only church on the island in the Byzantine manner, with two domes. Read more...

The white church of Agios Nikolaos belongs to Apergatika, a hamlet of some twenty-five houses on the Lakka side of the island, at the head of the valley that carries the saint’s name down towards the sea. It is unusually well dated. The lozenge-patterned doorway carries the year 1803, and above it sits a slab with a double-headed eagle. Inside, Read more...
