Voutoumi, on Antipaxos, is the beach people mean when they call the Ionian tropical. Fine sand, white stones, and water that stays turquoise far out. The survey of 1885 describes it almost exactly as you find it: fine sand, very thick white rounded stones, and at the start rusty and white horizontal strata with a fig tree growing out of Read more...

Plakes is on the coastal road from Gaios towards Mogonisi, a small beach of fine pebbles under dense vegetation, reached by a short path down from the road. The name means slabs, and it describes what you sit on. Flat rock runs out beside the pebbles, which is where most people spread out, and that stone is the same material Read more...

Galazio is on the west coast, south of Avlaki, and it is named for exactly what you see: galazio is the Greek for the pale blue the water turns here. There is no path and no road. You come by boat, which is why it stays as it is. The west side of Paxos is a wall of cliff for Read more...

Stafiucha is the first beach you meet coming from Mogonisi towards Gaios, small white pebbles under thick vegetation, visible from the road and reached by a short flight of steps. The name is the plain description: theioucha, sulphurous. Water carrying sulphur seeps out along this stretch of the south coast, and swimming in it is the point rather than the Read more...

Kamini Gouva is on the south coast near Mogonisi, a pebble beach with turquoise water, right on the road from Mogonisi to Gaios and easy to reach. Kamini means kiln, and the name is literal. The coastal survey of 1885 records the spiantsa at Kamini here, named from the small lime kiln on the shore, which was known as the Read more...

Avlaki is the inlet on the west coast below Fanariotatika, and its shape gives it its name: avlaki is a groove, and that is what the sea has cut into the rock here. It is the one shelter on this whole coast. The survey of 1885 states it without qualification: this is the only place on the west side of Read more...

Lakkos is on the north coast near Lakka, a pebble beach with clear water, with olives and cypresses coming down to the shore. The coastal survey of 1885 gives it as the shingle beach of Lakkos, with a spot beside it called the Strapounta of Lakkos where a small hut stood. Beyond that is the headland of Lamia, at Gerakeika, Read more...

Marmari is five minutes further along the path from Levrechio, a quiet shore with olive terraces and shade behind it. The name is not decorative. It means the marbles, and it comes from a wreck. The coastal survey of 1885 records that the cape here was also called at Barba Stamatelis, because years before a ship had gone down at Read more...

Planos lies behind the lighthouse headland of Lakka, on the northern tip of the island, and it has a date attached to it that no other beach on Paxos can claim. When the British took the Ionian islands, their troops came ashore here. The account written in 1885 says it plainly: when the English occupied Paxos they landed at the Read more...

Kaki Lagada is the broad pebble beach at the mouth of the Lagada torrent, on the east coast north of Gaios on the way to Loggos. It is reached by road, which is why it is one of the easier beaches on this coast to get to. Half the beach is organised, with a bar and sunbeds. The other half Read more...

Kipiadi is the longest beach on Paxos, a wide run of pebbles on the east coast below Loggos, with deep blue water and good holding for a boat. It is also the one that visitors rate highest on this coast, and the reason is simple: it is large enough that it never feels full, and there is no development on Read more...

Levrechio is five minutes on foot south of Loggos, a small beach of white pebbles with a taverna behind it. Its old name was Novrochio, and in 1885 it was not a swimming beach at all but a piece of infrastructure. This is where the submarine telegraph cable ran out towards Corfu, and the little building that served it stood Read more...

Orkos is on the north west coast below Lakka, and it is one of the few shores on Paxos where the survey of 1885 records coarse sand rather than stone. It lies in an olive planted basin, with the hill of Agios Georgios behind it and cypresses on the slope. Just along the coast from it is a place the Read more...

Monodendri is the long pebble beach north of Loggos, and the most developed on Paxos. It appears in the coastal survey of 1885 simply as the spiantsa at Monodendri, one name among dozens on this shore. It is no longer a quiet one. A walker who recorded these paths in 2012 already described the development here as extensive and rather Read more...
